What is Family Therapy?

Family therapy brings together multiple members from a family unit to help improve communication and resolve conflicts. It views problems within the context of family dynamics, recognizing that the behavior of one member affects everyone. This approach addresses relational patterns and shared challenges to foster healing and growth for the entire family system.

Initial Consultation

During your first session, the therapist will meet with family members to understand the primary concerns and goals for therapy. This involves discussing the family’s history, current stressors, and each member’s perspective. It helps establish a foundation for the therapeutic process ahead.

Develop Shared Goals

Together, the family and therapist will collaboratively identify specific, achievable goals for treatment. These goals often focus on improving communication, managing conflict, or adapting to life changes. A clear roadmap ensures everyone is working towards common objectives.

Number 3

Explore New Dynamics

Subsequent sessions involve engaging in various therapeutic techniques tailored to your family’s needs. This may include role-playing, active listening exercises, or guided discussions to uncover underlying issues. The therapist facilitates a safe space for open expression and constructive dialogue.

Number 4

Practice Skills at Home

Between sessions, families are often encouraged to practice new communication skills and strategies in their daily lives. This integration of learned techniques helps reinforce positive changes and accelerate progress. Regular application builds lasting healthy habits.

Testimonials

Five filled dark teal stars representing a five-star rating
I was referred to Dr Shay Burns to get tested for autism and ADHD as an adult. I was really impressed! After relatively only a few hours of interviews and testing, she wrote a report about me that showed she understood me at a deep level. Plus she’s very friendly, helpful, and fun to talk to.
